ALCHEMY AND THE FIRST DEGREE OF CRAFT FREEMASONRY
By: Paul Hardacre

Mr. Hardacre was invited to present a talk on Freemasonry and its relationship to Alchemy.  The following is an excerpt from pages 17 and 18 of the lecture:

Not only is Nature – “with its diverse herbs, roots, barks, minerals and metals” – the “mother of us all,” but she is also the “greatest alchemist of all.” She has all of time to complete the process of evolution which is constantly unfolding around us like a symphony. The alchemist seeks to assist in this evolution utilizing Nature’s own laws and methods. Alchemy does not recognize stability in the matter found in the realms of nature, positing instead that “in nature, nothing but change is stable, and nature itself represents a constantly occurring alchemy.” Alchemy can be considered as “a medium to helping the restoration of natural violations and to help nature attain its predestined state for all of its manifestations, that of perfection . . . As nature requires a certain period of time for the production of her specimen, so does the alchemist in his laboratory only in relatively shorter intervals.”
In short, “in the Laboratory, the alchemist can demonstrate Nature’s Laws at work and can speed the processes up.”  Informed by the ancient alchemical dictum Ora et Labora – or, work and pray – the alchemist labors “primarily for the benefit of mankind.” The laboratory is both “a temple and an oratory” wherein the alchemist labors, concocting secretly from herbs and metals potent medicines to help heal the sick and restore normal body functions. "The laboratory provides [the alchemist] with some powerful tools for accomplishing the Great Work.” Working towards the production of medicines affecting not only the physical being, but the soul and sport, the alchemist “is strongly linked to the material operated upon." The proper state of mind is essential for the successful confection of these “initiatic medicines.”  Editor's Note: Footnotes have been omitted.

This intriguing presentation resulted in a privately issued booklet. With little more than 8,000 words typeset and fully referenced with footnotes and bibliography, this perfectly bound little gem includes full color cover artwork.  Order your copy at:

  Did You Know?

YOU HAVE IT ALL WRONG by John H. Reid III

Your thoughts about yourself aren’t true.  Stop believing them.

Ever meet someone and think they were totally cool, only to find out that they were dishonest and untrustworthy.  Or the opposite.  Someone you thought was a jerk and they became your best friend.  You had them all wrong didn’t you?  You are doing that to yourself all the time.

All judgment is the other person’s projection.  And that includes your parents, really!  Just because they were your parents doesn’t mean they really knew you.  They had an image of you, communicated that image to you and you picked it up as if it were true.  And now you are believing that it really is true.

Unless they told you that you were divine, perfect, intensely lovable, of infinite value and they felt lucky to know you, they got you all wrong.  And so does everyone else who doesn’t share that opinion.  If you feel uncomfortable with me saying that right now, then you have you all wrong, too.  Because the actual truth is, your wonderfulness is beyond description.

I see that.  And I do NOT have you wrong.

You are Not Broken

No matter-what they say or who says it, you are NOT broken.

It really is amazing how many people (and institutions) have a vested interest in you thinking you are.  And they will be pretty relentless in their attempt to convince you.  But it isn’t true.

It’s a big lie actually.  A lie we have all bought into.  The fact is you came into this world innocent, open and purely yourself.

What IS broken is all of the learned behavior--All of the thoughts, feelings and responses that we have mistaken for ourselves.  You are NOT that any more than you are the car you are driving or the costume you wear on Halloween.  No matter how polluted a stream or a lake gets, the water remains the same pristine water it always was.  The pollution gets mixed up with it but it never bonds with it.  The water is still water.  And you are still you.  No matter what has happened, no matter what mistakes have been made, no matter who said otherwise.  You are, right now, that perfect, pristine, innocent soul, completely untouched by anything that is not innately you.

The water will always be pure.

MYTHS AND LEGENDS OF THE SUMMER SOLSTICE

By Paulette Dager-Harris

"Solstice" is derived from two Latin words: "sol" meaning sun, and "sistere," to cause to stand still. As the Summer Solstice approaches, the noonday sun rises higher and higher in the sky on each successive day. On the day of the Solstice, it rises an imperceptible amount compared to the day before. In this sense, it "stands still."

Common Myths About the Summer Solstice:

The Distance of the Sun from the Earth causes seasons to change.
 The Earth rotates around the sun in a circular orbit, so the distance between the sun and the Earth doesn't change much. Astronomer Larry Ciupik at the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum in Chicago tells us that the seasons change because the Earth is tiltedundefinedin the summer towards the sun and in the winter away from the sun.

The hottest day of the year is on the Summer Solstice.  It takes time for the Earth to heat up. The Summer Solstice brings in the most light, not the greatest heat.

Eggs can balance upright on a table during the Solstice. This is one of the biggest misconceptions of the Summer Solstice. Superstition reasons that because the Earth's axis is shifting on this particular day it is possible to balance an egg upright on a flat surface. Truth is that an egg usually balances upright on a table any day of the year if you know how do it right!

Legends and Celebrations of the Summer Solstice:

Early Druid Summer Solstice celebrations centered on worshipping the Sun. Modern-day Druids celebrate the incoming light.  Ancient Druids believed in the sanctity of the sun but modern Druids celebrate the sun as Earth's sources of light, food, energy and health.

For those Aboriginal people who lived in the northern latitudes there was much to celebrate at Summer Solstice.  The snow had disappeared.  The ground had thawed and warm temperatures had returned. Flowers were blooming and food was easier to find. Life was good!

The “Honey Moon” - the first or only full moon in June. Tradition holds that this is the best time to harvest honey from the beehives.  This was the time of year for weddings. Many ancient peoples believed that it was unlucky to compete with the deities, whose coupling occurred in early May at Beltaine so weddings were delayed until June.  June continues to be a favorite month for weddings. To encourage love and fertility, newly weds ate dishes and drank beverages containing honey. June remains a favorite month for marriage today, and for most couples, the wedding is followed by a “Honeymoon.”

"You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." American Proverb

The Power of Poetry

So this thy body is the instrument

Whereon may be played the Song of Life.

Nay, it is more than this;

For on this harp of ten thousand strings,

The wind of the Spirit moveth ever,

And soundeth night and day the melodies

and harmonies of that Eternal Song.

…..

This thy body, O child of earth and sky,

Is truly the heavenly Vision of the Goodness of the Eternal.

This thy body is the Palace of the King;

This thy body is the manifested world of God and man;

This thy body is the seamless robe of

ADONAI.

For I am thy Lord,

And the Lord and His Temple are ONE.
